ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA DE JOSÉ ESTÊVÃO

AVEIRO - PORTUGAL

SOCRATES -COMENIUS PROJECT

SEAT-LP –SYSTEM OF EVALUATION FOR THE ASSISTANCE OF THE TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS

ANNUAL REPORT

The Portuguese school in this project developed the majority of the activities planned for the school year 2002/03

1.      Organising activities

At the beginning of the school year:

-         the project co-ordinator introduced the project to the school pedagogical council where all the school community is represented and it was approved;

-         the project co-ordinator contacted different teachers and introduced the project to several departments in more detail;

-         four teachers from the mother tongue department and the foreign languages department volunteered to participate in the project and now form the school core team in it;

-         the team selected the fields they intended to assess the project on.

At this preparatory level the project co-ordinator and another teacher travelled to Hungary where they participated in the project meeting by:

-         presenting the Portuguese national educational system;

-         giving their contribution to the attainment of other objectives, namely the discussion of a common evaluation system, the reorganisation of the activity schedule for 2002/03, the organisation of a mobility map and the discussion of effective dissemination means for the project.

The team continued their research in the field of evaluation which has always been a major concern for the Portuguese teachers and was being discussed in the school in more detail for the last two years.

2.      Teacher exchanges/Project work

From 30th January to  4th February we received the visit of two teachers from Romania. During the meetings we showed them how our evaluation system worked and explained our interest in the project, in order to answer some of our worries, mainly concerning the quest for objectivity.

Afterwards, we decided we would contribute to the project with instruments to assess listening comprehension and attitudes and values, being those the fields which are usually more prone to subjectivity.

            In March the project co-ordinator travelled to Lamia, Greece, where the following activities took place:

-         observation of the applied Greek educational system ;

-         school dynamics observation: administrative and pedagogical structure, curricular organisation, extra-curricular activity planning, functioning;

-         class observation;

-         contacts with teachers: career expectations, role played in the Greek society;

-         contacts with students: career expectations, empathy towards school, participation in a study visit.

On the 14th and 15th March one of our French teachers participated in a conference/seminar in Lisbon where new approaches to evaluation were discussed as well as various instruments to assess all types of aspects related to the teaching-learning process.

            Back in Aveiro all the teachers in the project team developed and implemented the instruments they were preparing to present at the project meeting approaching.

From 11th to 17th May two foreign language teachers travelled do Venray, Holland, where they presented the instruments devised by the team and participated in all the activities on the programme. It was an excellent  opportunity to:

-         observe the Dutch educational system at work;

-         exchange information with other teachers from the host school;

-         observe classes;

-         exchange information with all the teachers in the project;

-         define a common basis for work in all partner schools;

-         define some instruments to be applied in all partner schools.

3.      Dissemination

At the moment, the project co-ordinator is completing the national web page on the project and the report for our National Agency is being prepared. Some articles for the school newspaper, for the Portuguese foreign language teachers' Associations and for a local newspaper have been written (though some not yet published) and a placard with information about the project has been arranged and put on display by the team.
