The Technique of Painting on Glass

It is a traditional technique in painting icons. The drawing is made on paper. Then it is placed on the back of glass in China ink. Then the coloring of the surfaces follows.

Technique. Those interested in this technique must provide themselves with some pieces of glass. The glass is degreased with alcohol or a diluting substance (on the side where the drawing is placed). The glass is laid on the drawing executed before. After that the drawing receives a edge (contour) by means of a thin brush or by means of a pen ( nib ), sunk in black China ink black moderating colour.

The drawing of the details follow, in black again. When everything is dried, the coloring of the surfaces follows-in moderating colors, tempera colors, sainted glass colors, printing ink or oil.

At the making up of the ICONS, the bronze can be used (the golden bronze or the golden sheet). After the colors had been laid and the drying process has been finished, a sheet of white paper is preferable to be linked over the drawing. The lick is made only on the margins of the drawing.

The successful art works- should be put in a margin.

In the glass painting technique- the colors are vivid and bright; the frames are simplified and the decorative techniques are used to fill the surfaces.

During the optional class "Decorating Arts", for the 6th grades A, ( General School "Nicolae Popoviciu", Beius, Bihor County, Romania), Biblical theme compositions are made by the pupils ( They can be seen on the computer site, by anyone who is interested).

For these composing themes, our teacher usually offer examples ( among many other teaching prompters) of our extremely rich folk tradition.

This is done in order to respect our Romanian iconographich art in Byzantine style, that is practiced in this side of Europe-ROMANIA, the EASTEREST part of the continent, still so much dramatically part of it.
