The school was founded in 1789 by the piarist order on the basis of Joseph II emperor's decree. At first it was operated as a four- years sub- secondary grammar school. It became the head/ main grammar school from 1806 to 1850, but later it was put back in the former category. From 1891 the school became an eight- class main grammar school and worked in this form until 1948, when it was nationalised. Then it got the „ four- class national grammar school" status and works in this form nowadays. It lived to see, -and fortunately survived the 5+1 education form, - which was typical of the 1960's-, the curricular reform in the 1970's, the introduction of the 5 days working week and the organisation of the optional course.
Schools got more independence from 1985. Instead of the classes with a special curriculum, we organised maths and foreign language classes in raised numbers of weekly hours.
The teaching- staff worked out the plan of the six-form classes in 1989. We got the authority to start these classes at first in the country. Since that time we have got beyond some successful final examinations. The education in our school became wider with health secondary school training in 1971. From 1994 there have been classes with Slovakian and German languages. These classes are tourist classes, in which the training is "five- year" course. Beside the theoretical and practical training the development of the body culture is very important, too. We have two gymnasiums, a weight room, tennis- and basketball courts and a boathouse in Karcsa. We have our student's canteen where pupils can eat and we provide accommodation for those students, who don't live in Sátoraljaújhely.
The achievements of our school
The students of our school take part in OKTV (national grammar school) and OSZTV (national technical school) competition every year, such as on local, county and regional levels. We were able to reach the 9th placing on the national final of the OKTV Math competition and the 10th placing in Russian language. Our students were able to reach good results in Math, Chemistry, Latin language, Geography and folk singing competitions. We achieved good results in Our Mother Tongue competition. Our school is one of the best in this respect.
There is a list of the secondary schools in Hungary. In this list we can find the numbers of those students who enter university and take successful final exam.
There are two types of list, depending on the types of the schools.
We were able to reach the 32th place in the national grammar school competition (out of 700 schools) between the term of 1996 and 2000/.
On the subject list we reached one of the 2 hundred places. (the 122nd in Hungarian Language, the 159 th in Biology, the 192 nd in Chemistry, the 200 th in English and the 64th in Math.)
Secondary Technical School of Nursing
A new system of training has to be introduced in secondary technical schools from 1st September 1998. According to the accepted professional requirements the professional training for nursing care consists of a two- or three-year-long professional training course which is based on the final examination.
Students applying to the secondary technical school of nursing learn the same curriculum as students in grammar schools in the ninth and tenth forms. But from the eleventh form onwards they can learn primary professional subjects and they can take final examination in these subjects besides the compulsory subjects (Hungarian language, mathematics, history, foreign language) as well. After the final examination students have a choice:
a. they can continue their studies on professional training courses which last for three years
and give trained nurse qualifications, or:
b. they can go on to higher education, and if they do not want to get intermediate professional qualification, they quit the professional training.
Until we can organize the first final examination after the introduction of the new training system (in 2002) we can provide a two-year-long course in professional training for students who have passed the school leaving examination in the secondary technical school of nursing. These professional courses meet the requirements of trained nurse qualifications. The curriculum of these courses is called BRIDGE-schedule, which refers to the connection of present and future training, it bridges over the differences between the two curricular conceptions.
II. Types of school in operation in the institution
There is a four-form and six-form grammar school, a secondary technical school of nursing, a bilingual technical school of turism in operation in our school; it also offers a three-year professional training course in nursing, a one-year training for tourist guides for those who have passed the final examination, and there is a one-year technician training for those students who have passed the final examination in the technical school of turism.

Bilingual Secondary Technical School of Tourism
The LXII/1996. law concerning the regulations of technical schools partly applies to the bilingual technical shools only.
In the latter case the subjects of general knowledge and the subjects of technical knowledge are also separated, but only after the eleventh year.
As this form of education is bilingual the education of the target language takes up twenty classes in the ninth year, and from the tenth year at least three technical subjects are to be taught in that language. This strengthens the technical line in the period of the education of general knowledge, and this way our technical school of tourism preserves its old characteristics more. There are not going to be practices during the school year and in summer as opposed to the former system. These will take place during the training year after the school- leaving exam (GCSE).
The training takes one year after the school- leaving exam (GCSE), after which students will be given a certificate of tourist technician. On the basis of the results in the school- leaving exam (GCSE), students will also be given an intermediate or advanced language exam.
The target language is either German or Slovakian and the second foreign language is English.
Students are not required to speak the target language in order to gain admission.
During the training year technical subjects are taught in the target language, so students have to pass the final exam in that language too. Therefore, the certificate is bilingual. Besides this students can get qualification as tourist guides or hostesses too.
